the mighty little puffin

The puffins and razorbills of the Farne Islands

Puffins and razorbills

I've waited my whole life to see a puffin!

This year I finally fulfilled the dream by travelling up to the Farne Islands in Northumberland.

I had to keep pinching myself to realise that these incredible, sturdy little birds were real... their colourful beaks full to the brim with sand-eels, flying overhead like torpedoes.

A surprise for me were the other birds on the islands. In particular I enjoyed the razorbills and I loved how their rich brown heads looked against the blue/green/grey background of the sea.

I think razorbills look really modern, like the future of apple devices or some really high-tech sports-wear!
